They Don't Cut the Grass Anymore

I was blown away by this movie. Especially the part where the dude in the "park" is trying to convince his girlfriend that he loves her. He sounded like an illiterate drunk guy trying to see and read the dialogue cards. It was amazing.

Next up is Fiend. I love Don Dohler flicks. :D

Frozen (2010) - Image

Excellent film about three friends who get stuck on a ski lift just as the resort closes for the week. The film struggles in its final moments, but not in an unforgivable way, a'la High Tension. It's very intense the whole way through, and one scene ("Don't you let her look!") really horrified me. (Note: I avoided trailers, clips, reviews, etc. before seeing this film, and I highly recommend you do the same to get the full effect. I'm doing the same thing with the upcoming Buried. Hopefully that will surprise me as much as this one did.)

Magic (1978) - Image

Saw this one a few years ago and liked it. Watched it again and loved it. Everything about this film fires on all cylinders. Hopkins and Meredith are incredible in their roles. The dummy is a brilliant prop -- creepy, memorable, but never hokey. "Make Fats shut up for five minutes" has got to be one of the most understated moments in horror history.

Isolation (2005) - Image

At the risk of making this film sound worse than it is, I'll just say an "experiment" involving cows unleashes genetically altered creatures that go after some people on a farm. The film is beautifully shot and unusually quiet in a good way. The final 15 minutes reminded me of Alien. But as a user on IMDb said, it's the B-movie plot that clashes with the execution. The filmmakers do wonderful work on the film, but the script -- the one thing every movie counts on -- isn't up for the job.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981) - Image

Little known TV movie from the early '80s starring Charles Durning (who I can't help but think of Peter's father in Family Guy). It's a killer scarecrow movie, but hardly the slasher you'd expect. This one is very well done. The set pieces where the wrongfully killed man gets his revenge still hold up very well. Acting is overall solid, but Larry Drake is excellent in a role that could've been disastrously cartoony. Highly recommended.

Masters of Horror: Sick Girl (2006) - Image

The less said about this one, the better. Angela Bettis, who I find extremely overrated, plays a lesbian bug freak whose new girlfriend is bitten by a bizarre new insect with freaky results. Bettis and co-star Misty Mundae are both god-awful throughout ("Do you have a DVD player?" -- "Yes. Yes-uh-do."). The makeup effects are really good near the end, but not enough to warrant a recommendation. See it if you want a laugh. Don't see it if you don't.

Trick 'r Treat (2007) - Image

I think I've talked about this one enough on Facebook. An anthology film that is beautifully photographed, edited, etc, but there's not a single story being told that's worth the trouble. A huge disappointment for me.

Black Water (2007) - Image

Decent low-budget suspenser about three people who become trapped in a tree with a crocodile waiting below them. There's some genuine suspense and solid performances, and I appreciated the filmmakers using a real crocodile instead of resorting to CGI. The script has some flaws, though, and the whole thing doesn't leave you with much to think about after.

Don't Go in the House (1979) - Image

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. A man named Donald who was a victim of child abuse at the hands of his sadistic mother grows up mentally disturbed, ultimately kidnapping and killing women in a similar method to the way he was abused growing up. The first thirty minutes are especially terrific as we follow Donald's descent into madness as he sets up and successfully commits his first murder. It's a really powerful and disturbing scene, but it's so strong that the rest of the movie ultimately suffers because it can never live up to it. Recommended overall, though.

House of Fears (2007) - Image

Decent but expendable film about a group of high school students who break into a haunted house known as the House of Fears, only to succumb to each of its terrors. This is a slick production for the most part. The set pieces are honestly quite spectacular, and the film uses most of them to their full potential (I especially got a kick out of the Egyptian tomb and the clown room). It's the script that tanks this movie. The characters are all generally unlikable. The final girl is so innocent, pure, and nice from the get-go, you're assured she'll survive after her first minute onscreen. Keep a close eye for Jared Padalecki's cameo in the party scene.
