So...At my job -
I applied for another management position. Think of it as a "sideways" promotion. I would leave the position of "Security Manager" and assume the role of "Employee Relations Manager" in HR.
I interviewed with both the Director and the Vice-President of HR. Things were going really well until a few days later when they hired a woman to take the position. Her initial interview was AFTER I had met with the HR Vice president.
Keep in mind - my interviews spanned almost a two month time frame.
Now, before I go any further, I don't have any "HR" experience per se, but this position was to be an "investigative" position within the company, conducting interviews and investigations. Something I'm very familiar with.
Anyway - long story short. I was told that I was not getting the position, to which I was slightly upset, but handled it professionally. The new girl started, and on her fourth day at work, left her ID, Blackberry, Laptop and keys on her desk when she went to lunch - and never came back.
So now, who do you suppose is going to be offered the job? If I am offered the job, should I take it?
Thoughts? (The job involves a slight pay raise and some traveling.)

In all seriousness, though, take it if offered. It's a job you want. Who gives a shit that they didn't offer it to you first?
I've been in that exact same spot. Twice. Twice someone else was picked for a spot I wanted, twice I ended up with the job, twice I kicked ass at it and got apologies for being passed up the first time.
I loved both promotions and didn't care in the long run.

I just think that it's a bit of a pride issue with me. If I wasn't good enough the first time, why should I bail them out because the person quit?
Don't get me wrong...if I'm offered the job, I probably will take it. I think it's just the point of the matter.

This is a very serious matter. I agree, something mysterious is obviously happening at this company. So far we know that at least one unknown HR Manager disappeared (which created the job opening) and the woman hired to replace them also disappeared. What we need to know is how long the 'original' HR Manager was there, and what happened to them in the days leading up to their disappearance. As Joe said, this is an 'investigative' position (which sounds strange, because I've never known an HR dept to 'investigate' anything but the new snacks in the break room) and I'm thinking that something's been uncovered that someone (possibly ODESSA) doesn't want brought to the light of day.
Another point I find odd about this, is that these mysterious disappearances seem like they should fall under the umbrella of Joe, since he's Head Security Guard there. But is he investigating? No, he's trying to get a promotion. Or is he? Is this a clever ruse to try to solve the mystery by putting himself directly in harms way? From what I know of the Ripplenator, I would believe this to be true. I think we can all agree on this one. Because I know that even though I'm way on the west coast, whenever I get caught shoplifting at the store he works for, all I say is, maybe before you call the police, you really should call your Chief Security Liaison Mr. Joe Ripple and see what he has to say about you trying to make his BFF your bitch. Do you think any BFF of the Ripplenator could be your bitch? And at this point, even though they've never met Joe Ripple, they know his reputation, and they ask if they can carry the inexpensive but well made suits to my car. I tell them they can carry it to my house, along with a large fucking pizza and a keg of beer, and they do.
So, to recap, Joe Motherfucking Ripple's gonna tear some shit up, yeah.

In all seriousness Joe, get over it and take the job if it's offered. You want it, why pass on it? That's foolish, you're not foolish. If anything, you're not getting sloppy seconds, they're realizing they fucked up and are making the decision they now know they should've made in the first place.
The thing with pride is, unless it's pride in a job well done, it's a load of horseshit. It's ego. It's talking yourself out of a job you wanted, because you feel an imagined slight. Pride is a mind game you play with yourself. How much bad shit did you see as a cop because of someone's pride?
So you think you weren't good enough the first time. You know what? You don't know what happened in all the interviews, or the thought processes of the people making the decisions. Maybe you were good enough. Maybe they wanted you, but also thought you were too valuable in your current position to move to another one. Maybe they thought it would be too difficult to replace you, and that it would be easier to get someone for this HR job. This type of thing is very common in the corporate world. You're a resource, and they're going to keep you in the best place to keep exploiting that resource. If you're good at your job, it's hard to leave that job because you basically show the higher ups that you're ideal in your current position.
Look at it this way:
Joe Ripple in position A is a 10.
Position B is empty
If Joe moves to Position B, he may not be a 10 there, and the person who replaces Joe in Position A may not be a 10. Currently, Position A is a 10, so that's kept as is and Position B is gambled upon. This is a safer bet than moving you, because that's gambling on both positions A and B. It's frustrating, but it has absolutely nothing to do with anyone being better than you.
So, in short, don't be a bitch about it, take the damn job. Be happy that you got the job you wanted. Be happy they believe you'll be good, and that they were wrong about their choice, and that they know they were wrong about their choice. Be a 10 in the job.
