Anyone have a Kindle Fire?

Postby Alien Redrum » Thu May 17, 2012 2:14 pm

I have built up enough gift certificates where a fire will run me about $40 out of pocket.

Before I jump in on it, I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with one.

My experience with it is only tinkering in Target with it. It seemed really good though. More responsive than the Nook Color. I've been trying to convince my mother to buy one (or let me buy her one for bday or mothers day etc.) just so that I can have some good hands on time with one.

From what I've read, it will do everything I want it to do, and $300 less than the iPad.

It even has Netflix now. :yay:

Given the choice I would still buy an iPad over the Fire. The size of an iPad is perfect for a tablet. I don't like using anything smaller. And the display is amazing on the new one.

One thing I did like a lot on the Fire is the UI.

I have one. I really don't ever use it, as I can do almost everything on my android, but it is a very nice stable platform, but highly reliant on amazon's infrastructure. If you pay for prime anyway, then you should get one, it's pretty cool for only $200.

What do you mean highly reliant on the infrastructure?

I mean, not annoyingly so, right? And I can still use Google Play for apps?

And thanks!!

afaik it doesn't support google play out of the box, but I think it can be hacked (rooted?) easily.

Google Play competes with the Amazon appstore so that's why it wouldn't be available.

hmmm. Okay. Appstore is definitely acceptable, and I'm not adverse to hacking. Maybe I'll place an order this weekend.

Okay, Mr. Mysterious... it's past 10p on Sunday night for you. The weekend's over! Are you going to tell us what you did? I've been following this thread and have been on the edge of my seat waiting for a new post! Your 'Maybe this, maybe that!' posting style has only upped the ante and I need to know how this ends!

I just got a Kindle Fire HD for the wife's birthday. It's great for what she wants to use a tablet for (which for the time being is a very expensive Sudoku machine). I like the size of it though. I thought I would dislike how small the 7 inch screen was but it's actually pretty easy to watch and read stuff.

I also have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and love that, but I like the ease of use of the Fire.

Okay, I'm definitely not defending this, because I don't agree with it either. It is bullshit that Amazon can do this (I'm thinking they all have the potential to do it, but it's neither here nor there).

However, if this part is true:

My guess is that Amazon has the capability to wipe any file from any Kindle, and likely also has the ability to read any file on any Kindle. I'd further speculate that the policy violation that Linn stands accused of is using a friend's UK address to buy Amazon UK English Kindle books from Norway. This is a symptom of Amazon's -- and every single other ebook retailer's -- hopelessness at managing "open territory" for ebooks.

...then, yeah, don't bitch if you get punished for doing something wrong.

It's like bitching that your drive of pirated mp3s get wiped because you got busted by the government.

I'm not saying she (or he) was pirating, as they very well might not have been, but when you are circumventing a process to get what you want, chances are you are breaking some sort of TOS. Otherwise you wouldn't have to circumvent anything.

I'm sorry, yes, yes it sucks that Amazon has that power. Or anyone has that power and I don't agree with it. At the same time, Linn needs to stop being a bitch because they were not following TOS and they paid for it.
